Mr. Solomon Lartey, Managing Director of Activa International Company Limited, has proposed the establishment of an effective insurance system for football clubs in the country, saying this will safeguard them for the future.
Mr. Solomon Lartey, was commiserating with officials and players of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, who were involved in an accident at Nkwakwa in the Eastern Region after their mid-week league game against Inter Allies at the El- Wak Stadium last Wednesday.
He said though the incident was a sad one, it was a strong reminder about the need for Ghanaian clubs to consider insurance policies as part of their planning processes for each season.
Mr Lartey told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that it was important that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) ensured appropriate insurance policies were put in place for players and officials at the beginning of each season, taking into consideration the fact that clubs travel across the length and breadth of the country every time to honor their matches once the league was on.
He said insurance package would provide clubs with the needed financial security in times of difficulties, as the companies would be on hand to support accident victims and also players who suffer from injuries during football matches.
He clarified that standard Personal Accident policies can protect players and officials when they are not playing or in pursuit of any sporting activity. However, specific Personal Insurance for Footballers in particular and sportsmen in general must be arranged for the various leagues in the country.
He added that such a policy would provide for the cost of treating victims, including death, and in cases where players ended up disabled after an accident, it would also cover their cost of treatment .
